The Surrey School District has been changing lately with letter grades. They are trying to get more schools to switch to the constructive criticism way. They are trying to make this change because they think that by taking out the traditional letter grades that it will encourage students to learn better because they have feedback they can use. Also their parents will be able to understand what they need to work on more clearly.
The Surrey School District think that it will in a way be a "win, win" for both parents and kids. Five elementary schools made the switch in the fall and 34 more did this month. The idea is by offering more info on how their kids are doing on projects and tasks, and focusing less on A,B,C. Because they think both parents and kids will better understand this way.
They are evaluating the program this summer. Then they will decide if they will make it permanent in 101 elementary school and 19 high schools. But it seems like most people like this idea.
I think that they should keep the letter grade system because I know lots of people who are excited to see what grades they got. It also would make me work harder than just getting a few comments about my work.
